I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched my phone screen dim, warning me that I’m running out of power. The dreaded red bar. The slow response time. The silent panic when I realize I forgot my charger at home.
We live in a world fueled by battery life. Phones, laptops, smartwatches, name them. Everything we rely on demands a constant recharge. It’s second nature now. We plug in at night, top off during the day, and carry power banks just in case. We do whatever it takes to stay connected.
But while we are diligent about keeping our devices charged, how often do we think about our own spiritual battery?
It’s easy to assume that a few Sunday services and a handful of hurried prayers will keep us going. But just like our devices, we drain. Life pulls at us. Worries deplete us. Distractions chip away at our power. And before we know it, we’re running on fumes, leaving us disconnected, sluggish, and barely holding on. I can’t count the number of times I have told myself that I am running on fumes.
A phone on 1% battery is an emergency. But a soul on 1%? We often ignore it, pushing through life without realizing how weak we’ve become.
The Warning Signs of a Drained Spirit
We don’t always notice when our faith is running low. There’s no flashing red bar or “low battery” warning. But there are signs:
Prayer feels like a chore rather than a conversation. Reading the Bible feels dry and uninspiring. Worship loses its wonder. Worry, fear, and doubt settle where peace used to reign. Temptations become harder to resist. Serving God starts to feel exhausting instead of joyful.
A drained spirit operates just like a dying phone—slow, ineffective, and unresponsive. And just as a phone eventually shuts down when the battery is depleted, so does our spiritual life when we neglect the source of our power.
The Source of Our Strength
Jesus made it clear:
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.” – John 15:4
Our spirits were never designed to function independently. Just as a phone needs to be plugged into a power source, we must remain connected to Christ. A once-a-week charge on Sunday won’t sustain us for the battles of Monday through Saturday. A quick five-minute prayer here and there won’t carry us through the trials and pressures of life.
A phone on 1% battery is an emergency. But a soul on 1%? We often ignore it, pushing through life without realizing how weak we’ve become.
Staying charged isn’t optional. It’s survival.
So, how do we ensure that we don’t run spiritually empty?
How to Stay Spiritually Charged
1. Prioritize Connection Over Convenience
Think about how often we check our phones throughout the day. We monitor battery percentages, close background apps, and dim the screen to preserve power. Imagine if we gave that same attention to our spiritual well-being.
A rushed morning devotion is like plugging in your phone for just five minutes—it won’t last. We need sustained, intentional time with God. Time in the Word. Time in prayer. Time in His presence, where our spirits are recharged.
“Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” – Isaiah 40:31
Waiting on the Lord isn’t wasted time; it’s charging time.
2. Recognize and Eliminate Unnecessary Drain
Certain apps drain a phone’s battery faster than others. Background processes running unnoticed can eat up power, leaving little for what truly matters.
Our lives are no different. Worry. Fear. Comparison. Unhealthy relationships. Too much time on distractions. These things quietly deplete us, leaving us drained before we even realize what happened.
Paul warns us in Hebrews 12:1 to “lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us.” Not everything that drains us is outright sin, but if it keeps us from God, it’s a drain we can’t afford.
What’s draining your spiritual energy? What’s keeping you from being fully charged? Identify it. Unplug from it. Protect your power.

3. Surround Yourself with a Strong Community
Ever been in a situation where your phone was dead, and a friend lent you their charger? It’s a lifesaver.
Godly community works the same way. When we are weak, our brothers and sisters in Christ lift us up. When we struggle, they pray for us. When our faith feels dim, they remind us of the truth.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17
The enemy loves isolation. He knows that a disconnected believer is vulnerable. That’s why fellowship is essential. Find a Bible-believing church. Stay plugged in. Surround yourself with people who will help recharge your faith, not drain it.
Charging with Purpose
But here’s the thing—charging is not the goal. Power without purpose is wasted potential.
A fully charged phone is meant to be used. A fully charged believer is meant to shine.
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14
We don’t stay connected just for ourselves. We stay connected so that we can pour into others, bring hope, share the gospel, and advance the kingdom of God.
A charged believer:
✅ Walks in faith, not fear.
✅ Speaks life, not negativity.
✅ Moves in power, not exhaustion.
✅ Impacts the world, not just survives it.
Check Your Battery
So, where are you right now?
Are you at 100%, full of passion and strength? Are you at 50%, aware that you need a recharge, but pushing through? Or are you dangerously low, barely holding on?
Don’t wait for your spirit to be depleted before you take action. Stay connected. Stay charged. Stay alive.
Because a powered life is a purposeful life.
